A-bomb survivor looks back on a life lived in N. Ireland | The Japan Times Online.

Interesting interview with a Japanese woman who has lived in Belfast for many years. I wrote about exiles before here and here. The word exile sounds somehow irrevocable but it’s much better than the ugly abbreviated expat.

George Best was a famous exile from Belfast.

Maradona good. Pelé better. George Best.

Thanks for your comment Carina. My parents also left their country.

  2. Thanks Niall for sharing this emotive article. Yes, times have changed, before that time Nobuko Pollock went to Belfast, in 1948 my mothers family exiled from Germany to Argentina, because of the work of her father and in 1951 my father exiled with a friend to the same country because Germany was all destroyed, both had to travel 3 weeks by ship and both did not know the language and costums. The only comunication was per letter, that took 2 or 3 weeks to get to the destination. The same communication as in 1975 when I went with 18 years to Germany. Now my children are still in the same country but almost 3 hours by plane away, but we can speak together every day and every time we like.
