sociologist who resisted internment

Sociologist who resisted internment dies in Canada – AJW by The Asahi Shimbun.

Vindicated.

Cool story about Gordon Hirabayashi. He was born in Seattle. His parents were Japanese. He was sent to prison for refusing to be interned during the second world war. He was an American. Trusting in the constitution he challenged the prison sentence all the way to the Supreme Court but lost . It was a terrible and indefensible decision of the Supreme Court which should have been defending the constitution of the USA.

But that is speaking as someone from a country which doesn’t even have a constitution, the United Kingdom. And they did get it right in the end. The sentence was overturned in 1987.

Finally on 2 January 2012 he and his former wife both died on the same day aged 93 and 87. They were joined together somehow.
